Summary

Continuous use of cover crops including legumes showed an N yield comparable with 70 kg total N/ha/yrin manure; Nitrate leaching is mainly influenced by use of cover crops and total N inputs –not by organic vs conventional cropping; Cover crop mixtures including legumes can self-regulate N-fixation; N surplus is linked to soil carbon stock changes.
Some conclusions:
- continuous use of cover crops including legumes showed an N yield comparable with 70 kg total N/ha/yr in manure
- nitrate leaching is mainly influcenced by use of cover crops and total N inputs - not by organic vs conventional cropping
- cover crop mixtures including legumes can self-regulate N-fixation
- N surplus is linked to soil carbon stock changes
