Summary

Farms with long‑living dairy cows tend to use more animal‑friendly housing systems and softer bedding materials, which support better cow comfort and longevity. They also follow distinct feeding strategies—such as more maize silage in winter and less protein concentrate in summer—that may reduce metabolic stress, though long‑living herds show a higher but non‑problematic ketosis risk. Overall, integrating welfare‑oriented housing and balanced feeding management is key to achieving greater dairy cow longevity and improving farm sustainability.
