Summary in the original language of the document

In the CORE Organic project POWER (Animal Welfare and Resilience in Organic Pig Husbandry), FiBL Switzerland, together with partner institutions from various European countries, looked at the husbandry of organic pigs. Among other things, the project addressed the question of how to improve outdoor runs for pigs. After all, concreted exercise areas without employment opportunities cannot optimally meet the demands of animal welfare. In workshops, farmers in different countries prioritized the following elements to improve the outdoor area: roughage, a pasture area and opportunities to cool down.
In the video, a manure area with compost and a pool for cooling down are presented on the farm of Brigitte and Walter Husy in Unterentfelden in the canton of Aargau (Switzerland). It is explained how the different outdoor elements function and how the pigs use them on the farm. One challenge with the manuring area is how to reduce pollution from faeces and urine. FiBL has conducted a trial on this, which swine expert Mirjam Holinger reports on.
