Summary

Annapurna farm supplies food to the Auroville community in Tamil Nadu province, South India. Past assessments have uncovered the need for a detailed farm level study to optimize production on this mixed organic farm. The aim was to analyse the current farm resources and key system flows, and to utilize the current suite of production options to find viable solutions for improved development that take the objectives of the farmer(s) into account. The method involved representing the farm’s components in the model Farm DESIGN. By defining objectives, parameters and constraints, the model can be used to explore scenarios by generating pareto optimized solutions for improved development. Two partial, and one integrated scenario were tested and within each scenario, solutions for maximum operating profit, maximum organic matter balance and a tradeoff between operating profit and organic matter balance were examined. In all scenarios the solutions that were generated were improvements from the current situation. The economic indicators, operating profit and gross margins from crops and animals, were vastly increased from the current situation, the greatest improvements in the integrated scenario. The improved performance required additional labour and this was assumed to be available at the current cost. In almost all solutions organic matter balance was increased. Final recommendations include converting forestry and unused land to dryland cropping, including greater areas of green manures in the rotation, increasing the irrigated rice area and increasing the milk production and number of milking cows.
