[The aim of the project is to investigate several measures to control downy mildew in organic lettuce farming and to combine the best of them. This includes tests of field-resistant varieties, biological agents and cultivation techniques like the distance between rows, their adjustment to wind conditions, as well as a soil cover. The cultivation techniques can help prevent the development of downy mildew but the effect is insufficient to control the disease. The use of the soil cover (Agryl P50 Mulch) did not reduce the infection with downy mildew. The best results were achieved when field-resistant varieties were used, especially in cases when the infection pressure of the pathogen was not too high. In the case of severe disease pressure, the tested varieties were infected and did not show any sufficient protection against Bremia. The present results with field-resistant varieties suggest that some of the tested varieties can be recommended for regional use, only. The biological agents, especially the plant extract from liquorice, showed much effect on downy mildew when tested in climatic chambers and greenhouses whereas it was variable in field trials. Further investigations are required to improve the formulation of the plant extract from liquorice regarding the stability to UV-light and rain, as well as to optimize the time of application.] Paper at: 11.
