Summary

Summary translation

The joint research project BIOBUG focused on the development of an innovative and sustainable pest management strategy against the invasive Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (Halyomorpha halys), that causes significant damage to fruit and vegetable crops in recent years. There is a particularly urgent need for effective plant protection strategies in organic farming, as no approved control methods are currently available. The objective of the project was to develop a biotechnical approach to control pest populations. The project aimed to investigate a Push-and-Pull and Attract-and-Kill system based on the use of encapsulated semiochemicals, including aggregation pheromones, and plant-derived kairomones. The aim was to selectively repel pests from crops (“Push”), attract them to designated trapping sites (“Pull”), and thus effectively reduce their populations (“Kill”). This approach enables targeted pest management while minimizing impacts on beneficial organisms and the environment. Within the project, suitable semiochemicals and biological insecticides were identified, encapsulated, and evaluated for their effectiveness. In addition to reducing pest populations, particular emphasis was placed on the practical applicability of the system under field conditions. The results demonstrate that volatile based pest management strategies offer considerable potential for the sustainable control of the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug. Additionally, the approach contributes to reducing the use of external inputs and thereby supports environmentally friendly production in organic agriculture and horticulture.
