Summary
Extending dairy cow lifespan slightly lowers total sector‑wide greenhouse gas emissions, even when reduced dairy‑sector meat output must be compensated with more CO₂‑intensive suckler beef. Policies supporting longer productive lifespans therefore consistently reduce emissions, and shifting toward dual‑use cattle systems can further decrease the carbon footprint by producing more meat within the dairy sector and replacing emission‑heavy suckler beef.
