Summary in the original language of the document
The aim of this study was to investigate whether we can achieve the welfare of pigs kept indoors comparable to the pigs, reared outdoors by using enrichment materials and increasing floor space. A total of sixty Krškopolje pigs were divided into three equal groups; one indoor group and two outdoor groups. Different aspects of animal welfare were assessed: behaviour, health status, living and enviromental conditions. The preliminary results showed high levels of welfare in all groups of pigs. The study demonstrated that by using straw and increasing floor space, the welfare of indoor pigs can be improved to the extent that is comparable to welfare of outdoor pigs.
