Summary

The current report aims to show where organic agriculture in the European Union (EU) stands in relation to the Farm to Fork strategy's goal that 25% of the farmland should be organic by 2030. It was written in the framework of the project "How can we reach 25% organic land in Europe by 2030?" funded by the LIFE programme and managed by IFOAM – Organics Europe. It represents one of the bases for the IFOAM Organics Europe report "‘Prospects & developments for organic in national CAP Strategic Plans", which is available at https://www.organicseurope.bio/content/uploads/2021/06/ifoameu_advocacy_CAP_StrategicPlansAnd25Target_202106.pdf
In this report, we are presenting
• An introduction to the background and methodology (Chapter 1)
• Key data on organic in Europe and a summary of the findings (Chapter 2)
• A detailed overview, including graphs and tables, of the status of organic agriculture in the European Union (Chapter 3), taking into account all relevant indicators (area, livestock, operators, retail sales, international trade)
• An analysis of data by total farmland, land use, key groups and retail sales, with a special focus on the 25%-area target set out in the Farm to for strategy (chapter 4)
• An analysis by member State (chapter 5)
• A synthesis of the results
• References
• Data sources
• Reference tables
This report is only one of the outputs of this project.
Further outputs include:
(a) Interactive online tables displaying data for the European Union and by member state on
o Key indicators on organic agriculture
o Area data (organic farmland and organic farmland share)
o Area for selected crop groups
o Market and trade data (retail sales and international trade data)
o Retail sales (total retail sales, growth, rates, per capita consumption, share of total retail sales)
(b) Interactive infographics based on Microsoft PowerBI displaying data for the European Union and the member states
ο Organic farmland, organic farmland shares of total, wild collection, producers, retail sales, imports.
For the farmland data, forecasts are available on
ο Land use and key crop group data, including forecasts.
