Summary

With experience from several projects in bioeconomy, especially working with recycled fertilisers, this presentation was given on behalf of NORSØK to a seminar arranged by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food to discuss circular economy. We argue that bioeconomy research on residual materials, e.g. fish waste, cannot only focus on utilisation as high-paid products e.g. food and pharmacy. We also point to challenges linked to that the markets of residual materials are highly dynamic; low-paid materials may suddenly become well-paid, hampering that industry actors take the risk to establish an industry to process such materials.
