Summary

I Skien driver Knut Vasdal økologisk melkeproduksjon.

Summary translation

Knut Vasdal runs organic milk production in Skien, Norway. He has developed a pilot plant that processes cattle manure into four different products; a fiber-rich portion suitable for composting, biogas, a phosphorus-rich pellets, and a liquid concentrate containing nitrogen and potassium. This extends the field of application of manure and precision fertilization becomes possible. The pelleted cattle manure was tested in an experiment with forage maize, which often needs starter fertilizers with phosphorus (P) in addition to basic fertilizers. When cattle manure is allocated in the form of pellets, spreading equipment intended for mineral fertilizers can be used, and it is easy to apply fertilizer nearby the sown seed.
The experiment was conducted with the variety "Reason" in Melsom in Vestfold in 2019. The maize was fertilized with four different fertilizers and was balanced in relation to P-content, except that two different amounts of pelleted manure from the pilot plant was used. Crops were recorded and samples from each treatment were sent for chemical analysis. Three different statistical methods were used to test the effect of the different fertilizers on the maize yield and find any differences in the yields between treatments.
There were several factors other than starter fertilization with P that contributed to the variation in yields. None of the fertilizer types examined differed when it came to crop yield. Starter fertilization with 13 kg P per hectare from pelleted cattle manure did not produce lower yields than similar amount of P from YaraMila Mais and NP 12-23.
Several experiments with the fertilizer fractions from the pilot plant should be carried out in different crops in order to conclude more certainly in relation to effect, precision fertilizing and what quantities are suitable for different crops. The experiment has shown that basic fertilization for fodder maize, even in bad years, can give good yields.
