Development of organic pig production

An increasing demand for organic products is now evident in the area of meat. Organic pig meat in particular is thought to be in short supply, despite the fact that relatively high prices are currently being offered for organic pigs. In the short term the market for organic pig meat is apparently unable to stabilise itself. Such a situation, in which the consumer is asking for pig meat which the slaughterhouses and pig producers are unable to deliver, is unsatisfactory for all parties.

The main objective of this project is to set the foundations for a considerable increase in organic pig production, thereby providing a greater supply of this kind of meat to the market. A sub-aim is to acquire better information on production and farm conditions, as well as the economy of this type of production. Furthermore, the project aims to solve a number of problems in the primary production with the help of R&D.

The project is being conducted by monitoring 4 production herds which have transferred to organic farming methods (or are in the process of transferring). These herds control a total of about 550 sows, three of the hold-ings being Study farms.
