Summary

Summary translation

For many crops, pest insects can make sever damage. Therefore, in conventional production system insecticides are widely used. However, there is a concern about the negative impact of pesticides on the environment and human health. Control strategies of pest insects involving the use of insect traps will therefore be more sustainable. The old type funnel traps used to trap the strawberry blossom weevil (SBW) seems to have low trapping efficiency. The present project aims to develop a new trap with higher trapping efficiency to make new control strategies of this pest insect. The SBW like most other beetles have claws and hairs that enable them to adhere to surfaces, each in specific ways. By testing nine different plastic materials the SBW were able to stick to all of them. However, on some of the smoother types, the weevil had to struggle a bit more for not losing the grip. In the field test more SBW were caught in the new developed traps in the first half of the study. In the second half, it was recorded that more weevils were trapped in the old type. This surprising result can be due to change of trap inspector in the middle of the trail. The new designed traps were black, and it can be challenging to observe small dark beetles floating along the edges in the new traps
