Summary

Introduction. Presentation of the Champs du Bois farm in Orges, Switzerland, where three farmers manage 230 hectares of mixed farming. Explanation of the principle of biogas and how slurry and manure are transformed into energy. Overview of the support and services provided by Ökostrom Schweiz, followed by insights into the project’s profitability and organisation. The video also highlights the fertilising properties of digestate and concludes with key takeaways. The event is part of the European ClimateFarmDemo project, showcasing sustainable agricultural practices across Europe.

What problem does the tool address?:On the Champs du Bois farm in Orges, Switzerland, large amounts of slurry and manure are produced from mixed farming with suckler cows, fattening pigs and crops. Without proper management, methane emissions from this waste contribute to harmful greenhouse gases, and farms often rely heavily on mineral fertilisers.
What solution does the tool offer?:The farmers invested in a biogas plant to better use slurry and manure. By capturing methane, the system converts it into electricity and heat for neighbouring villages. The remaining digestate is used as a natural fertiliser rich in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, reducing mineral fertiliser use by 35%.
