Ved lagring av bløtgjødsel dannes det klimagasser, særlig metan. Ulike tiltak kan bidra til å redusere disse utslippene.
Metan er en potent klimagass med mye sterkere oppvarmingseffekt enn karbondioksid. I Norge anslås utslippet fra gjødsellager å utgjøre 20 prosent av utslippet av metan fra kyr. Metan er den viktigste kilden til klimagassutslipp fra bløtgjødsellager og dannes når organisk materiale i gjødsla brytes ned ved mangel på oksygen. Det er bitte små organismer, arker, på størrelse med bakterier som lager metan. I bløtgjødsellagre er det kuldetolerante arker som omdanner eddiksyre til metan.

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas with a much stronger warming effect than carbon dioxide. In Norway, emissions from manure storage are estimated to account for 20 percent of methane emissions from cows. Methane is the most important source of greenhouse gas emissions from liquid manure storage and is formed when organic material in the manure breaks down in the absence of oxygen. It is tiny organisms, archaea, which have the same size as bacteria that produce methane. In liquid manure storage, there are cold-tolerant archaea that convert acetic acid to methane.
