What problem does the tool address?:In order to protect carp from avoidable stress during stunning and slaughter, all work steps associated with slaughter, such as caging, sorting, transportation to the slaughter room and stunning and slaughter, should be carried out as gently as possible for the fish.
What solution does the tool offer?:According to the Animal Welfare Act and the Animal Welfare Slaughter Ordinance, fish may only be killed in fish farms if they are stunned. A method approved for fish must be used for stunning. These recommendations deal with stunning by head blow and electric current. The steps involved in stunning and slaughtering in fish farms depend on many operational factors. For example, the specific requirements of the marketed fish species, the demands of the consumers, the type of products, the spatial conditions and the farm structure must be taken into account. For this reason, it is not possible to draw up generally applicable guidelines for stunning and slaughter that are binding for every farm.
