Summary translation
This study compares the environmental performance based on the results of a comprehensive sustainability assessment of Austrian organic farms with those of a sustainability assessment model for conventional production. Using a stratified random sampling method, 245 organic farms from different product groups (e.g. poultry, storable vegetables) were selected and analyzed using the SMART farm tool. Data from conventional production were based on expert interviews, statistical data, and scientific literature, calculated using Monte Carlo uncertainty simulation. The results highlight the consistently good ecological sustainability performance of organic farms in the areas of atmosphere, water, soil, biodiversity, materials & energy, and animal welfare. The better ecological sustainability performance of the surveyed organic farms points to their potential for reducing the negative ecological impacts of agriculture and food production.
