Torf besitzt als Substratkomponente hervorragende Eigenschaften: Er kann sehr viel Wasser speichern, hat einen niedrigen pH-Wert, ist strukturstabil, äusserst homogen und gut pressbar. Leider ist die Trockenlegung von Torfmooren sehr umweltschädlich. Die Ansprüche an alternative Rohstoffe sind hoch.
