Summary translation
There is an increasing interest for forage crops which capture nitrogen or use nitrogen very efficiently, both in conventional and organic farming. Research in Denmark has indicated that quinoa whole crop silage (quinoa-WCS) is quite promising as an high yielding forage crop. In this research, harvest took place prior to seed filling because the palatability of the quinoaseed is low due to the presence of saponines, which give a bitter taste. However, recent breeding efforts have yielded new sweet quinoa varieties that are low in saponines. Low saponine quinoa varieties may have the advantage that the seeds can also contribute to the yield and feeding value. Therefore, in 2000, an experiment was conducted to study the opportunities of quinoa WCS as forage for dairy cattle.
