As part of the EU-programme Quality of Low Input Food (QLIF; see www.qlif.org) a researchers´ meeting on rearing laying pullets and dairy calves was organised. These proceedings contain the summaries of the eight lectures that were given during that day. Titles of the lectures: Rearing conditions and adult performance – a scientific framework with examples from poultry and cattle husbandry; Best rearing practices for organic laying hens; Developing rearing practices for the future; Suckling systems at organic dairy farms in The Netherlands; Calf rearing at Frankenhausen research farm and organic pilot farms; Experiences with rearing from a research point of view ; Welfare aspects of pullet rearing – behavioural freedom versus health; Animal health in organic production systems in practice.
