In dit rapport is verslag gedaan van een verkenning naar enkele opties van fokkerij specifiek voor de biologische varkenshouderij. De studie levert materiaal voor een discussie over de te volgen weg om de biologische sector verder te professionaleren. Behalve een keuze voor de inrichting van de fokkerij (het scenario) en directe economische consequenties zijn er ook andere zaken die beschouwd dienen te worden, zoals risico´s, afstemming qua volume tussen vraag en aanbod, sturing van prijs en kwaliteit van de opfokzeugen, rassenkeuze enzovoort.
Summary translation
An explorative study has been carried out to review the breeding and economic related consequences of sow replacement systems for the organic pig farming sector. In the longer term, the use of maiden gilts from the conventional pig breeding is not expected to be tenable, and for this reason ´organic´ breeding is required. The cost of maiden ´organic´ gilts is calculated as approximately €410. Consequently, the cost increase compared to supply of ´conventional´ gilts amounts to €7 per piglet and 12 cents per kg slaughter weight. Further studies in breeds appropriate for organic farming, structure of the breeding operations, collaboration, and the adoption of an international approach are required.
