Summary
Après une période d’arrêt de 2003 à 2005, la récente recrudescence des reconversions, avec une augmentation de 29 % en 2006, porte à 3,5 % la part de la superficie agricole wallonne reconvertie au mode de production biologique. La bonne maitrise technique des agriculteurs et le régime efficace d’aide au maintien, sont à mettre au crédit de cette évolution.
Côté marché, les signaux sont globalement positifs au niveau européen. En cause, la structuration progressive des filières longues stimulées par la grande distribution et les chaînes de magasins spécialisés. Les observateurs annoncent pour les années à venir, une offre déficitaire sur les marchés européens des viandes porcine et bovine avec, en réaction, une forte augmentation de la production bovine destinée à l’exportation dans les pays traditionnellement producteurs d’Amérique latine (1).
Cependant, ces chiffres globaux ne doivent pas occulter les particularités de chaque filière dont l’analyse peut révéler des situations divergentes. C’est le cas notamment de la filière viande bovine bio en Wallonie. Bien que la grande distribution y draine 55% de la demande, la consommation nationale est stationnaire depuis 2001. D’autre part, en Wallonie, 70% des animaux allaitants issus de l’agriculture biologique produits sont valorisés sur le marché conventionnel.
En réponse à cette situation et en concertation avec le secteur bio, la Direction de la recherche de la DGA à commandé une étude sur le sujet donnant lieu au projet ViaBio.

After a period of stagnation from 2003 to 2005, the recent upsurge in conversions, with an increase of 29% in 2006, brings to 3.5% the share of the Walloon agricultural area converted to organic production. The good technical mastery of the farmers and the efficient maintenance aid system are to be credited with this evolution.
On the market side, the signals are globally positive at the European level. This is due to the gradual structuring of long chains stimulated by mass distribution and specialized store chains. Observers predict a supply deficit on the European pork and beef markets in the coming years, with a strong increase in beef production for export to the traditional producer countries of Latin America (1).
However, these global figures should not obscure the particularities of each sector, which analysis may reveal divergent situations. This is the case for the organic beef sector in Wallonia. Although supermarkets account for 55% of the demand, national consumption has remained stable since 2001. On the other hand, in Wallonia, 70% of organically produced suckling animals are sold on the conventional market.
In response to this situation and in consultation with the organic sector, the DGA's Research Directorate commissioned a study on the subject, which led to the ViaBio project.
