Summary

Slik tildekking bør skje enten gjødsla lagres under
tak eller ikke. Hvis gjødsla lagres i hauger utendørs over flere uker må man ta hensyn til plassering i
terrenget slik at det unngås avrenning.

Summary translation

This report was produced by request from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food during January-
March 2021. The assignment was to assess the suitability of a potential legislation request for
manure from poultry to be stored in dry condition. The report estimates the amount of poultry
manure produced in Norway by 2021 from available statistics and describes how poultry are
generally produced in Norway and how this affects the composition of the manure. Thereafter, the
storage of relatively dry manure from poultry for slaughter (chicken and turkey) and semi-dry
manure from laying hens are discussed, with a perspective to reduce gaseous losses of ammonia
(NH3). Losses of NH3 from poultry buildings, during storage and linked to application in the field are
important for the poultry industry to consider for environmental protection. This report focuses on
the storage. Based on the description of the current situation for poultry production in Norway,
and a review of international literature, we propose that the poultry farmers should cover
windrows of poultry manure with plastic or permeable fleece, dependent on the dryness of the
manure. Such covering should apply also for manure stored indoor. If poultry manure is stored
outdoor over several weeks, care must be taken about placement to avoid runoff and pollution of
water bodies.
