Summary

Summary translation

This article intends to provide a short insight into general aquaculture, its connections with fishery, past and present problems, challenges and drawbacks and organic and sustainable aquaculture.
Because of the high complexity of the topics, they can only be explained very briefly, as aquaculture is equivalent to agriculture. Aquaculture is the production of aquatic organisms, independent of the intended use. Geographically the overall majority of production takes place in Asia. Overall production volumes in aquaculture are growing faster than in any other food producing sector while production volumes from fishery, the other seafood producing sector, are stagnating since years. Aquaculture can be conducted in a very sustainable way but can also lead to similar problems as those known from intensive agriculture.
