Summary

Summary translation

This report is about one part of a two-part project conducted by Norwegian Centre for Organic Agriculture. The purpose of this part of the project was to find out whether the use of wood chip for deep bedding can provide equally good welfare as use of straw for deep bedding, and whether there is a difference between costs and workload. An experiment was conducted with two pens with young cattle of heifers at Tingvoll Gard from January 11 to April 4, 2016, where deep bedding of wood chip and straw were compared. We investigated the animals lying behaviour, cleanliness, occurrence of parasites in the animals faces, and the litter and deep bedding of wood chip and straw were examined for among other things, the content of microorganisms. The results of the experiment showed that the animals had significant longer lying time on straw than on wood chip. There was no difference in the number of lying bouts or lying time per bout, and no difference either in the animals’ cleanliness or parasites in their faces, which there was very little of. There was a lot of mold both in straw and wood chip, especially in wood chip. There was a lot of yeast in one of the straw samples. Various bacteria were found in both straw and wood chip. In our experiment there were used much larger amounts of wood chip than of straw, but the amount of work was biggest with straw as the straw sealed the slatted floor. The experiment can be considered as a pilot experiment as it was a small experiment with a low number of animals. Straw appeared to be a more comfortable lying surface that gave better welfare for the animals, but wood chip can also be a good material that can be used in areas with little access to straw. However, more research is needed on wood chip for deep bedding for cattle to make safer conclusions when comparing wood chip versus straw.
