Summary

Summary translation

In organic farming only cupreous agents are available to control downy mildew and Phytophthora infestans in vegetables and potatoes. The plant extract from Glycyrrhiza glabra (liquorice) has a proven efficacy against Oomycetes in several vegetable crops under controlled conditions (greenhouse), however, the liquorice extract shows varying efficacy when applied in the field. Therefore, a joint project funded by the Federal Institute for Agriculture and Food (Bundesanstalt für Landwirtschaft und Ernährung, BLE) aimed to develop a plant protection product based on liquorice extract which is highly effective in the field against Pseudoperonospora cubensis and Phytophthora infestans. Semi-field systems in tomato and cucumber were established to test novel liquorice extract formulations on rainfastness and stability under sun exposure as well as on application parameters to improve disease control. The results of selected formulated liquorice products showed that there was a clear dose-response relation between increasing rates of liquorice product and disease control. Furthermore, high disease control was only achieved at high rates of the product (10-16 kg/ha) and water (800 l/ha). However, after 1-2 days of sun exposure in the field or simulated rain (7 mm), the biological activity of the formulated liquorice products decreased dramatically, as shown by bioassays with P. infestans on tomato and P. cubensis on cucumber, respectively. None of the tested formulations proved to be efficiently stable to rain and sun exposure. In field trials, different application techniques and application intervals were tested in potatoes and cucumber. In potatoes the tested formulated liquorice product had no effect on late blight development and disease severity, independently of the application technique used (standard field sprayer and in combination with droplegs). In cucumber, a slight reduction of downy mildew development was observed at the beginning of the season, lasting approx. 1 week, when liquorice was applied every seven days. In addition, an increase in yield was noticed.
