Summary translation

The selection of the right seeding date for soybeans is difficult due to their warmth requirements and the limited growing period in Bavaria. In total five seeding dates from the beginning of April (the ten-day period from 01.04 till 10.04) to mid May (the period from 11.05 until 20.05) were tested over a period of four years. The variety Merlin was used in the trials, which were conducted at Viehhausen Research Station near Freising.
Crop emergence was always rapid (less than two weeks) for seeding dates from the end of April onwards. Crop emergence was always considerably slower (three to four weeks) for seeding dates at the beginning of April. In one year emergence also took three to four weeks for a seeding date in mid April. Soybeans planted in April always reached full maturity in September, whereas seeding in May could delay harvesting. As soybeans sown at the end of April also had the highest yields and protein content, this seeding period is recommended for many regions in Bavaria.
