Summary

Summary translation
Since 1987 trials have been performed with variety testing in ecological farming in Sweden. Every year 4-5 trials with cereals, pulses and potatoes respectively, with 8-12 varieties in each crop were carried out. The trials, placed on private ecological farms, were conducted in basically the same way as the conventional testing with four replicates, plot size 25-30 sqm. In the trials the yield, basic quality, cultivation properties (standing power, shortness of straw, earliness of ripening, diseases etc.) were registered. In addition, the competition ability to weeds was observed.
The varieties were primarily selected according to their performance in conventional testing, but a few varieties were chosen according to expected good competition ability without prior conventional testing.
Results
The results have shown that in many cases, varieties with good performance in conventional testing were also good in ecological farming. However, many important exceptions were observed. It is not possible to rely solely on conventional testing. Most important differences in yield were caused by differences in straw length and standing power. In ecological farming, lodging is less severe due to lower nitrogen input. This means that tall varieties with high weed competition ability in some cases will surpass shorter varieties. The winter survival is also more important in ecological farming, where thin stands will have a low weed competition. Disease resistance is less important concerning e.g. mildew and leaf spot, where the lower nitrogen level causes lower attacks. Resistance to seed-borne diseases are more important.
