Summary

Locally adapted, disease-tolerant and more robust cultivars are developed, while well-performing heritage and local varieties are valorised as a reservoir of climate resilience and robustness. Fruit growers are closely involved in the selection process, taking into account their own conditions and needs, and regain decision-making power in discussions on variety protection and income-sharing. Participatory organic fruit breeding creates stronger connections with growers through on farm tastings and boosts public awareness of the value of fruit genetic diversity and the rich diversity of tastes, aromas, uses and beneficial health properties.
Practical recommendations include:
1. Build trust and relationship before formalising structure,
2. Co-define target traits from the outset,
3. Evaluate on-farm — without shortcuts on time,
4. Co-evaluate through structured tastings and field visits,
5. Formalise governance and rights-sharing, and
6. Leverage digital tools for data collection and transparency.

What problem does the tool address?:In conventional and organic breeding alike, fruit tree varieties are generally developed by researchers or private companies and delivered to growers who are not involved in the process of trait selection, governance, or release. Many commercial varieties are not well adapted to low-input organic or unsprayed growing conditions, while thousands of locally adapted robust heritage cultivars remain too often outside formal breeding programmes.
What solution does the tool offer?:Participatory organic fruit breeding engages farmers to different degrees across breeding stages, making them co-designers and co-owners, rather than end-users, of new varieties. Breeders and growers jointly define target selection traits (to select towards a defined "ideotype") and evaluate mostly elite material (=advanced breeding material), in some cases, seedlings. Evaluation takes place exclusively under growers’ organic conditions, often low input, in a few cases unsprayed. Variety release is managed through written agreements between all partners.
These approaches have been validated in five InnOBreed case studies: NovaFruits (BE/FR) on collaborative governance and rights-sharing; Apfel-Gut (D) on close interaction between pomologists, organic growers and applied researchers; Apple Oasis (DK) on heritage variety valorisation and amateur involvement; CRSFA Basile Caramia (IT) on autochthonous genetic diversity, education and consumer engagement; Apfeland Poma Culta (CH) on digital data recording and multi-environment testing across countries.
