Summary

This practice helps breeders and evaluators identify apricot genotypes most susceptible to flower bud necrosis and flower abnormalities under their environmental conditions to avoid using them in breeding programs. It also allows growers to identify and signal problems when the trees are cultivated in orchards.

EPrint Type:Practice tool
What problem does the tool address?:Flower bud necrosis and floral abnormalities on apricot trees can significantly reduce the potential for fruit set and the productivity of a cultivar. The problem is linked to the genetic background of the cultivar and is influenced by the climatic conditions and fluctuations during the autumn and winter (i.e. dormancy period) that precede the flowering time.
What solution does the tool offer?:This three-part visual scoring protocol lets evaluators estimate the impact of the bud necrosis problem on the fruit set and productivity by considering (I) flower density, (II) flower bud necrosis, and (III) floral abnormalities, using simple field gestures (touching buds, kicking the trunk) and a photographic scale to determine the score of impact.
