Summary

The Open Source Seed (OSS) system protects seeds, their progeny and derivatives from exclusive appropriation by keeping them freely available for cultivation, saving, breeding, development and sale. This approach supports long-term freedom to operate for organic farmers and independent breeders and is particularly relevant for diverse materials such as Organic Heterogeneous Material (OHM). Wider awareness, networking among OSS initiatives and greater use of open-source pledges and licences can help strengthen seed rights and support more accessible and diverse seed systems.

What problem does the tool address?:Current seed governance frameworks have transformed seeds from res communis (things held in common) into res propria (private property), constraining farmers’ and breeders’ freedom to access, save, exchange and improve seeds.
What solution does the tool offer?:The Open Source Seed (OSS) system, implemented through tools such as pledges or licences, aims to restore seeds to their status as a common good and protect them from private appropriation.
