Summary

Summary translation

Gestation in ewes is a crucial phase for the sheep sector, directly affecting animal productivity and health. Optimal management during this period ensures a sufficient number of healthy lambs while improving both milk quality and yield, which are economically vital for farmers. However, gestation induces oxidative stress, leading to the production of free radicals that may negatively affect ewe health, fetal development, and increase the risk of neonatal mortality. Supporting the antioxidant defenses of ewes is therefore essential.
The “OPAL” project in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes proposes an agroecological solution by incorporating locally sourced aromatic plants, naturally rich in antioxidants, into the diet of pregnant ewes. This approach aims to improve animal resilience, thereby reducing lamb losses, veterinary costs, and reliance on chemical treatments. Particular attention will also be paid to maintaining product quality.
By promoting the use of local resources, the project supports a circular economy linking crop production and livestock farming. It could also stimulate the local economy by strengthening the economic viability of both targeted sectors.
