Summary
Cultivating PM-tolerant varieties would allow more yield and fruit quality, mitigation of the environmental impact of fungicides, and cost savings. Moreover, such varieties could be used as parentals in breeding programmes aiming to increase PM-tolerance in commercial varieties. The InnOBreed peach working group has developed practical guidelines to assist in the harmonized ranking of cultivar susceptibility to PM through field observations.

| Teaser: | Powdery mildew in peaches - which cultivars are best? |
| What problem does the tool address?: | Powdery mildew (PM) is a major disease in peach, caused by the ascomycete Podosphaera pannosa. White spots on leaves and shoots or fruits are the infection's outward sign. Severe infections can cause early leaf drop, shoot halting or drying out, and negatively impact yield and quality. Nectarines are generally more susceptible than peaches. To our knowledge, there are no commercial peach cultivars resistant to PM, but there is a variability of susceptibility. |
| What solution does the tool offer?: | In organic peach orchards, sulphur-based products are used for the preventive control of PM from the petal-drop stage onwards. The use of disease-tolerant cultivars would reduce yield and fruit quality losses, as well as the need for plant protection inputs. |
