Environmental impacts of European broiler production vary widely across systems that differ in rearing conditions, input intensity, and animal growth traits. Indoor fast‑growing systems generally showed lower impacts per kilogram of live weight—particularly reduced land use—but higher impacts per unit of land area compared to outdoor slow‑growing systems. Overall, environmental performance depends on a complex interaction of system type and animal traits, highlighting the need to evaluate impacts alongside meat quality and animal welfare.
