Summary

Several countries have banned the culling of day‑old male chicks, leading to greater interest in fattening “brother roosters” or using dual‑purpose breeds, though data on their performance and welfare remain limited. In a study across Swiss farms, final live weight was mainly determined by genetics, and welfare was consistently high, influenced further by housing type and season. Feeding pullet feed from day one improved growth in brother roosters, and ongoing life‑cycle assessments aim to evaluate the overall sustainability of these emerging production systems.
