Summary

Summary translation

Treating wheat seeds with white vinegar is recommended to prevent common bunt (Tilletia sp.), a fungal disease of wheat mainly transmitted by seeds. The treatment is carried out at a concentration of 4-5% acetic acid with a maximum recommended dose of 2 liters per 100 kg of seeds. The smut spores are permanently deactivated on contact with acetic acid, but how exactly spores are affected is not specified in the literature consulted. A trial was carried out by ITAB and the seed cooperative Union Bio Semences (Ubios) to better understand the effect of the treatment on bunt spores. In particular, the aim was to determine whether the treatment leads to structural denaturation of the spores, or whether their viability is affected while leaving their walls intact. In the first case, counting the spores under a microscope, the usual method of detection and quantification, would allow verifying the sanitization of a given seed batch after treatment.
In this trial, vinegar treatments had a greater effect on viability than on the number of whole Tilletia sp. spores counted using the usual detection method. This implies that the sanitizing effect of the treatment is not observable by standard spore counting. The recommended standard treatment (4% acetic acid, 2L/100kg) reduces the proportion of potentially pathogenic spores by a factor of 4. The reduction in spore count achieved by the treatments appears to be attributed to the rinsing process, as an equivalent reduction was observed with 0% acid.
