Summary

In this video, basics about using insects as protein rich feed for livestock are explained and shown.

EPrint Type:Practice tool
Teaser:The larvae of the black soldier fly as fish feed.
What problem does the tool address?:Protein-rich feedstuffs such as soy or fishmeal are often imported. At the same time, there are enormous quantities of organic residues in Germany that are hardly ever used.
What solution does the tool offer?:However, the larvae of the black soldier fly can utilise a number of these organic residues and convert them into valuable protein. They are fed, for example, with harvest or peeling residues from a farm or residues from the regional food industry, such as spent grains or old bread. This makes them a sustainable, protein-rich and regionally produced feedstuff. Insects have also been approved as feed for aquaculture in the EU since 2017. In the "Sustainable insect production" project, regional insect production is being tested on a farm for the regional production of fish feed and tested in feed studies.
