Summary
The Soil Navigator helps them answer the question: ‘how can I best manage my land in order to meet all expectations?’ Farmers can also submit their ambition levels regarding the five functions and baseline soil and management information for a given field. Together this enables the Navigator to give advice on issues such as field margin management, nutrient management, fertilisation and agricultural lime supplementation.

Teaser: | A Decision Support System for assessing and optimizing soil functions. |
What problem does the tool address?: | The soil has a key role to play in terms of combating climate change, feeding 10 billion people in 2050, and preserving and rejuvinating biodiversity. A large percentage of the soil is owned by farmers, placing pressure on them to resolve these major issues. The LANDMARK project showcases how scientists from Wageningen University & Research are working with 21 partners from 14 European countries to develop a ‘soil navigator’ for farmers, an assessment tool for policy makers and a policy framework for Brussels. |
What solution does the tool offer?: | The Soil Navigator decision support system (DSS) was developed in the Horizon 2020 project LANDMARK. It assesses the initial capacities of five soil functions within a field, including primary productivity, nutrient cycling, water purification and regulation, carbon sequestration and climate regulation, as well as biodiversity and habitat provision. In addition, this evidence-based DSS offers targeted solutions and management recommendations to improve the supply of several soil functions simultaneously and assisting farmers and farm advisors to make the right decisions for long-term sustainability. |
