Summary

This video was created during a Climate Farm Demo visit and Pierre Mariotte and his team presents the potential of several tree species (ash, willow, mulberry, linden, etc.) to produce alternative leaf-based fodder when grass no longer grows.

EPrint Type:Practice tool
Teaser:A demonstration of several tree species at the Comex du Borgeau Farm in Carrouge, Vaude (Switzerland).
What problem does the tool address?:Faced with increasingly frequent summer droughts due to climate change, Agroscope is testing an innovative solution: fodder hedges.
What solution does the tool offer?:The hedges are planted densely and managed to encourage the production of young, leaf-rich branches. The addition of branch wood chips (BRF) improves tree growth and soil moisture, without irrigation. Researchers also identify obstacles, such as damage caused by voles, and assess the nutritional value of trees already present on farms.
