Summary

Boki Luske and colleagues at the Louis Bolk Institute, working with researchers across the AGFORWARD project, have updated the “Online fodder tree database for Europe”. New records on the digestability, protein and tannin levels, and the macro- and micro-element concentrations in tree leaves have been added to the database. The database also includes direct links to cited literature sources. In total the database now contains more than 700 records from 100 tree species that are relevant for European conditions. The database allows selection of individual species, groups of species, and specific nutritional aspects of tree leaves.

EPrint Type:Practice tool
Teaser:Database for sharing and further developing practical experience with fodder trees.
What problem does the tool address?:The use of trees and shrubs in Dutch farming systems dates back to the beginning of domestic agriculture. Trees provided many useful products, such as firewood and building material, wood for wooden shoes and tool handles, and twigs for wicker baskets. Unfortunately, with the decline in traditional on-farm uses of wood, trees are disappearing from Dutch farms and therefore from the Dutch landscape. As a result, biodiversity and landscape quality are decreasing, and knowledge about the on-farm use of trees and shrubs is being lost.
What solution does the tool offer?:Capturing and preserving knowledge about agroforestry systems is important, with the purpose to share and further develop practical experience with fodder trees.
