Summary
The tool explains how to design plantations, for which it is necessary to take into account the different ways of spatially organizing revegetation actions, the selection of species - it provides information on more than 70 and a selection of them for five contrasting environments -, the planting material, the design of the planting modules or combination of species that are repeated and the correct assessment and organization of the necessary resources. It also explains how to carry out the plantations, in particular the layout of the design of the plantation on the ground, the previous preparation of the soil, the opening of holes and the plantation itself , as well as its maintenance. Finally, it presents a summary of FIRE's “Campos de Vida” project, whose vision is the renaturalization of the landscape compatible with agrolivestock activity. The Guide aims to encourage and contribute to planting hedgerows and forest islands and, ultimately, more diverse fields.

What problem does the tool address?: | Agroecosystems (croplands and pastures) have expanded to the detriment of the original natural vegetation and occupy almost half of the land in the world, and Spain. In addition, many of the remnants of natural and semi-natural vegetation have been simplified and lost as a consequence of the intensification of agriculture. This vegetation has an important role in the conservation of biodiversity and the maintenance of ecosystem services, including agricultural production. |
What solution does the tool offer?: | The main objective of this Guide is to provide techniques for planting hedges or living fences and forest islands in Mediterranean agricultural fields, in a way that is compatible with the agricultural use of the territory, to reduce the aforementioned simplification and losses. |
