Summary in the original language of the document

This information sheet reflects the current state of knowledge on the planting and use of fodder trees and shrubs on farms with ruminants. It is based on the results of initial trials and experience gained in Switzerland and abroad. Further results will be available in the coming years in order to refine knowledge on the subject.

Summary translation

Teaser:Current state of knowledge on the planting and use of fodder trees and shrubs on farms with ruminants.
What problem does the tool address?:Global warming in Switzerland is a fact, as the average annual temperature has risen by 2°C since 1864. Depending on which climate protection measures are implemented, this rise in temperature could even reach 3 to 5°C by the end of the century. This climatic warming particularly affects farms with ruminants. Grass growth fluctuates greatly over the course of the grazing season and can even be almost completely absent in dry weather. In addition, the animals have to endure very hot temperatures in summer. Under these circumstances, farms must find solutions to counteract the lack of feed and protect animal welfare.
What solution does the tool offer?:Forage trees and shrubs can provide an additional source of feed for ruminants. In addition to this forage-growing function, the trees offer further benefits for the farms. These include reducing erosion (stabilizing the soil), increasing the organic matter in the soil, creating structures that promote biodiversity and regulating the water cycle. Thanks to their deep root systems, trees and shrubs are better able to withstand drought. They also offer animals' protection, especially in hot or windy weather. The use of trees and shrubs to feed the animals is not new and was already common in the past. Nevertheless, this method must be adapted to today's husbandry systems and the legal framework conditions in Switzerland must be complied with.
