Summary translation

Teaser: | Cultivation, harvest and processing for small production volumes |
What problem does the tool address?: | Many farms have a few walnut trees. Even with the small quantities harvested, farms can supplement their range of farm produce. Correct drying, processing and storage are always crucial for successful marketing and flawless product quality. |
What solution does the tool offer?: | The walnut also has potential for large-scale cultivation. Growing regional cultivation areas offer a sensible alternative to imports, sometimes over long distances. At the same time, sales channels and processing techniques are already established. New producers can benefit from this through services or existing cooperatives. Walnut trees are a frequently chosen tree species in the new agroforestry plantations that have been established in many places. They can provide both fruit and valuable walnut wood. However, patience is required for both: the higher the canopy, the longer it takes until the nuts are fully harvested, often around ten years. Future generations will be happy about the wood harvest. Nut cultivation is normally only possible up to around 1000 meters above sea level. Favorable climatic conditions and varieties suitable for high altitudes can enable cultivation higher up. |
