Summary in the original language of the document
Plastic is a versatile, robust, easy to use and cheap material that is present everywhere in our modern life. Agriculture – including organic agriculture – relies on products made of different polymers and their combinations to produce efficiently and protect commodities. Plastic equipment’s improper removal, tear, wear and degradation over time can leave behind Macro- Micro- and finally Nanoplastics in the soil. Moreover, plastic residues come unintentionally in the soil carried by water, wind or via applied inputs (recycled fertilizers, coated seeds, etc.). The EU project MINAGRIS investigates the use of plastic in agriculture in 11 European Case Study Sites and studies the impact plastic residues can have on the soil and dependent living organisms.
This session includes insight into plastic in agriculture and the work done within MINAGRIS. We will introduce the impacts of plastic management in agriculture and discuss a more sustainable management of plastic in crop production and waste management. We will give an overview of the current plastic-relevant policies and instruments and discuss potential improvements.
