Summary in the original language of the document

In the film, FiBL expert Steffen Werne and Herbert Volken from the Visp Agricultural Center in the canton of Valais present their findings on the use of tannins in parasite control in sheep and goats. The conclusion of the trials is that sainfoin can provide some support, but the approach is not practical enough due to the unfavourable cost-benefit effect. Tests are currently being carried out to see whether a more cost-effective method can be developed by feeding tannins from wine marc.

Summary translation

What problem does the tool address?:Controlling gastrointestinal worms in sheep and goats is a major challenge, as conventional dewormers are losing their effectiveness. In addition, organic farming aims to minimize the use of medication. FiBL Switzerland has been working for many years on the development of alternative treatment strategies, including the use of tannins.
What solution does the tool offer?:Tannins occur naturally in some forage plants and bind to the proteins of gastrointestinal worms, which can lead to a reduction in their vitality. Sainfoin, a plant rich in tannins, was tested in feeding trials and showed promising results: parasite excretion was reduced by 25%. In practice, however, it turned out that the cultivation of sainfoin is very costly and the effects on animal health did not meet expectations. Therefore, the curative approach was changed to a preventive approach in which less sainfoin is fed. The aim is to reduce the egg excretion of the worms in order to minimise reinfection from the pasture. In trials with dairy goats, a reduction in egg excretion of around 20% was observed in the sainfoin group, but this difference could not be statistically proven. Interestingly, significant differences in flavour were found in the cheeses made from the milk of these groups.
