Summary in the original language of the document

Keyline advisor Katja Degonda (https://www.ondaka.ch/) summarises the principles of keylines as follows: The slowing down, retention, infiltration and distribution of the water. In addition, the farm combines keylines with agroforestry to diversify food production, support the water cycle and improve the microclimate. Participants at the demo event expressed great interest in introducing keyline systems on their farms. However, the need to adapt the system to each individual farm was also emphasised. This demo event showcased important developments in climate-friendly agriculture. It also emphasised the importance of sharing practical experience between farmers.
The Swiss Association of Organic Farmers, Bio Suisse, has set itself the goal of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. An important part of achieving this goal is to facilitate the exchange of knowledge within farmer working groups.

Summary translation

What problem does the tool address?:Climatic changes and weather extremes in the form of longer periods of drought already pose a challenge for many farms. There are various approaches to preventively respond to drought. Since spring 2023, irrigation ditches have been dug, water storage basins built and trees and shrubs planted in stages on the Katzhof. These are all elements of a holistic water management plan based on the KeyLine design. The aim is to slow down the water in the landscape and thus optimise the distribution and infiltration of water on the land.
As part of a ProBio specialist event, participants learnt about the Katzhof system (www.wasserkultur.ch ) with farm manager Markus Schwegler and consultant Katja Degonda
What solution does the tool offer?:Many farms are already implementing climate-friendly measures. In this video, we present the example of the Katzhof farm, which has to deal with challenges such as uneven rainfall distribution and extreme weather events. To improve water management, Markus Schwegler has introduced the so-called Keyline design on his farm.
