Der Anbau von Biozuckerrüben ist herausfordernd. Die Branche ist aber mit vollem Einsatz daran, die Fläche und die darauf erwirtschafteten Erträge zu erhöhen. Dabei spielt die Automatisierung eine wichtige Rolle. Während man in der Deutschschweiz hauptsächlich auf die roboterisierte Saat und Unkrautbekämpfung setzt, geht man in der Westschweiz einen anderen Weg. Soeben hat eine Gruppe von knapp 20 Produzenten eine Firma gegründet und einen Pflanzroboter angeschafft. Die Pflanzung ist zwar kostenintensiv, sie ermöglicht aber einen raschere mechanische Unkrautbekämpfung mit dem Blindstriegel und gibt der Rübe Vorsprung gegenüber der Saat. Dies wirkt sich auch in einem höheren Ertrag aus.
