Cows on pasture are particulary susceptible to heat stress. We therefore investigated on four Swiss dairy farms how beginning heat stress can be reliably detected in cows on pasture. We observed on 30 days on pasture: Feeding, ruminating, lying, standing, distance to drinker, cows in shade, and number of cows standing together. For each observation day and farm, a segmented regression was calculated and the presence of a breakpoint was analysed. Subsequently, we calculated whether the maximum temperature-humidity index (THI) had an influence on the change in behaviour (breakpoint yes / no). Cow behaviour differed greatly between farms. However, we could not detect a consistent change due to THI across all four farms for any of the behavioural indicators examined. Other factors that may influence behaviour of cows on pasture might have covered a potential effect of THI on behavioural changes.
