Animal welfare including the facilitation of species-specific behaviour have a high priority in organic animal husbandry. In pigs, there are two behavioural patterns for which they show a high motivation but cannot be fully displayed in most commercial housing systems: Rooting and wallowing. We therefore investigated how growing-finishing pigs use a rooting area filled with compost and a pool in the outdoor run of an organic farm. We observed focal pigs and the whole group by means of video recordings on eight days in Spring/Summer. Results showed that both areas were intensively used. With raising temperatures, the use of the rooting area decreased while more pigs were observed using the pool. The use of the pool increased during the day and was higher for heavier pigs. Pigs urinated and defecated into specific areas of the rooting area and into the pool. We concluded that both additionally provided areas were attractive for the pigs and contribute to an improvement of animal welfare.
