EPrint Type:Practice tool
Teaser:Learn how to bring back biodiversity and ecosystem services by combining vegetables and fruits in agroforestry systems.
What problem does the tool address?:There is a need for more research to find more sustainable forms of organic fruit growing.
What solution does the tool offer?:Agroforestry has gained attention in the past years because many farmers want to get away from pesticide use but also because of wanting to create more connections between agricultural and ecological systems. Agroforestry is a good way of bringing biodiversity and ecosystem services back to agricultural plots. Some of the ecosystems of fruit trees are windbreak, the introduction of organic material and higher water retention and provisioning by large root systems of the trees. In addition, trees can serve as habitats for many species, such as birds.
